## Introduction of Toggle Switch

• The toggle switch is a type of electrical switch that is identified by the presence of handle or lever that makes it possible to control the flow of electric current/signal from a power supply to a device or within a device.

• It is a hinged switch that can assume either of two positions ie. ON or OFF. It is used to switch between two conditions in a circuit.

• Toggle Switches employ rocker-type contact mechanism.

• Being easy in operation, toggle switch can be used in a number of different applications, both in commercial and in house hold appliances.

• It is housed in an anti- tracking moulded case for dust free performance, thus last for many years before being replaced.

• To protect from false switching, a flip cover is used as switch guard.

• Some Toggle switches comes with small length of handle making its operation difficult. Thus, to over come this drawback, Handle extensions are used.

• They are available in SPST, SPDT, DPST, DPDT contacts terminology.

• Now a days in home applications like for switching lights/fans Rocker Switches are used instead of Toggle Switch.

• ## Specifications of Toggle Switch

• Mechanical life: 40,000 make and break cycles.
• Maximum contact resistance: 10MOhms.
• Initial voltage: 2 to 4V dc.
• Current: 10mA for both silver and gold plated contacts.
• Minimum Insulation resistance: 1,000MOhms.
• Dielectric strength: 1,000Vrms at sea level.
• Operating temperature: -30 Degree Celsius to 85 Degree Celsius.
• NOTE: This specifications changes with different manufacturers, requirements, etc.

## Classification of Toggle Switch based on application

1. Military Purpose Toggles:
• Military purpose toggle switches are designed to meet the requirements of MIL-S-83731. Sealed switches have a silicone rubber lever seal assembled between the lever and the bushing to resist the entrance of contaminants such as dust, sand or water into the contact structure.

• 2. General Purpose Toggles:
• General Purpose Toggles are AC or DC rated mechanically actuated switches designed to respond to many types of mechanical stimulus.

• 3. Heavy Duty Hesitation Switches:
• Heavy Duty Hesitation switches are available in either two or three-position. The three-position switches offer a unique positive center stop/OFF feature with their widespread acceptance for motor reversing and speed control applications.
