Introduction to PCB?

A PCB (printed circuit board) is also known as a printed wiring board. It is used to build electronic devices like modules, evaluation boards, motherboard, etc. A PCB is a place used to mount the components and provide the path of electrical connection between various components that has to be mounted on it.

A PCB consists of a thin non-conducting sheet of material (glass fiber, epoxy laminate material). A thin layer of copper is then chemically deposited on each side of this material.




Various kinds of PCB's

Single Sided/Layered PCB
  • This is the simplest of the Printed Circuit Boards as there is only a single layer of substrate. All electrical parts and components are fixed on one side and copper traces(electrical path) are on the other side.

  • Single Sided PCB Single layer PCB

    Double Sided/Layered PCB
  • It is the most common type of PCB, where parts and components are soldered to both sides of the substrate. Double-sided PCBs have connecting traces on both the sides. Double-sided Printed Circuit Boards usually use through-hole construction for assembly of components.
  • Double Layer PCB

    Multi Layered PCB
  • Multi layered PCB consists of several layers of substrate separated by insulation. Most common multilayer boards are: 4 layers, 6 layers, 8 layers, and 10 layers. These types of boards are used in extremely complex electronic circuits.

  • With a multilayer PCB a piece of Pre-Preg may be placed between these cores to create one solid board with several copper layers. Pre-Preg is made of material similar to the core with additional adhesive that will adhere it to the layer above and below.

    Materials used in PCB?

  • Laminates are manufactured by hardening under pressure and temperature of the layers of cloth or paper with thermoset resin to form single piece of uniform thickness.

  • Core material is a inflexible sheet of fiberglass resin material that has two sheets of copper adhered to either side. Some PCB's may have a copper sheet on only one side.

  • Resin infused B-stage cloth (Pre-preg): Pre-Preg material is made of similar material as the core material but is in a soft, pliable form and comes in standard-sized thin sheets.

  • Copper foil is a thin sheet of copper that is placed on or between Pre-Preg materials and bonds to the Pre-Preg with the adhesive.

  • Copper plating is primarily used only on the finished board and provides an additional thickness of copper to the board. Generally, the external plating is used after the board is drilled and the external copper of PCB is etched leaving a thicker trace.
